      Discusses the emergence and growth of support for conservation biology at universities in the U.S. Efforts to create a special issue of "BioScience" which includes a guest lecture series and discussion groups within the University of California at Berkeley (UCB) Department of Forestry and Resource Management, originating from a lecture series with the theme "Managing for Nature Conservation: From Genes to Ecosystems"; Importance of the tools for translating biological information into management decisions, including in the preservation of endangered species; Biological emphasis and concern for perpetuating biological diversity which distinguishes the discipline of conservation biology from traditional natural resource management.
